Color Code List

According to the the Color Code List, the the bits in the 16 bit value represent the following color.

RRRRR GGGGGG BBBBB

This is weird because for the green color the are 6 bits available an for red and blue there are 5 bits each.

This makes it more complicated to calculate the exact color you want.

Better make this 5 bits for each primary color and ignore the most significant bit of the color code.

Example:

X RRRRR GGGGG BBBBB

0 11111 11111 11111 = white

1 11111 11111 11111 = white

0 11111 00000 00000 = red

1 11111 00000 00000 = red

0 00000 11111 00000 = green

1 00000 11111 00000 = green

0 00000 00000 11111 = blue

1 00000 00000 11111 = blue

Better make this 5 bits for each primary color and ignore the most significant bit of the color code.

Example:

X RRRRR GGGGG BBBBB

Do you know if this format is used anywhere else ? Maybe we should avoid creating a new format.

Sure:

This microsoft article describes both the current implementation (MEDIASUBTYPE_565) and my proposal (MEDIASUBTYPE_555), which are both frequently used implementations for 16-bit uncompressed RGB Subtypes.

If transparency can be supported I would even suggest MEDIASUBTYPE_ARGB1555 or MEDIASUBTYPE_ARGB4444 depending on the resolution of the alpha channel.

I am now reviewing all of the Feature Requests, this will take some time, patience please.

The 16-bit 65536 color depth using 565 is the standard.

Calculations are difficult

1555 - would reduce the display to only 32768 colors

Carried forward - a color calculator tool, 1555 color scheme.
